Common Concepts within Materials
Although Wood, Metal and Plastic are completely different materials in terms of their properties and so forth but they do share similar concepts between them. Some of which I shall discuss within this section of Materials and Processes.
Firstly there are always three main motivations for primarily working with Wood, Metal and Plastic these common concepts are:
- To change the materials function
- To alter the properties of the material
- To transform materials appearance
Every process that you apply to any material will always be indifferent depending on the type of material used however, there are common concepts and principles that every material will have in common - Wood, Metal, and Plastic can all be shaped and have a finish applied to them:
- They can all be shaped through Wasting, Deformation, Moulding and Casting, and Fabrication.
- They can also all have a Finish applied to them - The finishes will vary yet the underlying concept remains the same throughout each finish.
All of above pointers mentioned are common practices and concepts that are used within schools.
Above is a image that I created on a mind mapping site. It shows the differences between each material.
